Berkeley SkyDeck startup creates 'digital seatbelt' for self-driving cars

#artificialintelligence

UC Berkeley SkyDecky startup "!Important" has made it a mission to save lives through software that would prevent self-driving vehicles from striking pedestrians. When a 49-year-old woman died on March 18, 2018, after getting struck by an autonomous Uber test vehicle in Tempe, Arizona, Bastien Beauchamp was inspired to create a product that would prevent more self-driving cars from hitting pedestrians and, in turn, save lives. More than two years later, as part of UC Berkeley SkyDeck's startup accelerator program, Beauchamp and his company,!Important, have developed technology that he calls "the digital version of a seat belt." The software uses smartphone location data and machine learning to calculate distances between pedestrians, drivers and self-driving cars and to alert all of them prior to a collision. "Pedestrian fatalities are a significant problem," said Beauchamp.

New Greek Startup Twiddle Will Transform Your Videos

#artificialintelligence

Several Greek startups have stood out in the past few years, somehow able to break free of the fetters of the economic crisis and the mass exodus of educated, skilled individuals to other countries. One of these enterprises is Twiddle, a group of four talented Greek computer whizzes who want to not only make videos sound better but also have a greater impact on the viewer. The idea was simple: Most videos posted on social media, whether they are amateur personal videos or commercial marketing videos, suffer from the poor choice of music used with them. As a result, they may not have the overall effect the maker intended. "Twiddle is a platform that uses Artificial Intelligence with a focus on sound, for content creators. We apply the most innovative AI technologies and advanced neural networks to automate the process of identifying, recommending and positioning the best matching sound effects and music in videos. Phase A: The already available Twiddle Mobile App, which is meant to showcase the core of our AI-powered technology by organically attracting users which also helps in building synergies with music & sound licensers. The Twiddle Mobile App is already available in 40 countries and in 7 languages, in both the Apple App Store and Google Play where it entered the top 10 Trending Entertainment Apps soon after its release. The Twiddle mobile App also houses a social-interaction feature, where users can upload their creations, follow other creators, interact with the uploaded content, message each other and more. This feature is currently available in a limited number of regions. Phase B: In anticipation of our next funding round, we are further developing our AI-powered technology to be made available through plugins in established video editing software. That plug-in offering will allow professionals to save up to 60% of the time it takes to create content will also offer to novice creators the opportunity of creating quality content without the steep learning curve of sound embedment. It will be available with simple subscription for consumers and custom case-by-case pricing for Enterprise accounts."

Cohort of 14 U.S. and international startups to relocate to Bentonville for 12 weeks PRESS RELEASE – The first-ever Arkansas-based artificial intelligence and machine learning accelerator will launch later this month, with the goal of helping a cohort of startups within these fields connect to regional enterprise partners. The Fuel Accelerator, in its second iteration, will provide regular, hands-on education and workshops to a cohort of 14 companies from across the United States, Europe and Asia. These 14 companies will make their way to Northwest Arkansas, at the foot of the Ozark Mountains, for a 12-week, enterprise-ready accelerator that will provide them with access to other startup founders, industry experts, institutions of higher education, and public policy officials. AI-Based Startup Aims to Streamline Aircraft Inspections, Turnarounds

#artificialintelligence

An aviation industry startup accelerator program has selected an artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP)-based platform called Whispr to help improve the speed, accuracy and safety of aircraft inspections and turnarounds. As part of International Airline Group's (IAG) Hangar 51 accelerator program, Whispr is partnering with Spanish carrier Iberia to implement its hands-free voice guidance platform on two projects. The first project is being conducted with Iberia Maintenance at Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) to digitize the aircraft inspection documentation process on the airline's new fleet of Airbus A350s, which up until now has been entirely paper-based. According to Hugh O'Flanagan, Whispr's co-founder and CEO, the existing inspection process entails engineers walking around the aircraft and checking tens of items in each different section as they manually complete a paper-based report, which then has to be manually input into a system.

In the Accelerator over the Sea – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

In our oceans the scale of disasters is measured in millions, billions, and trillions, while solutions amount to single digits: individuals or institutions working to impact a chosen issue with approaches often both brilliant and quixotic. Putting such individuals in close contact with both whales and billionaires is the strange alchemy being attempted by the Sustainable Ocean Alliance's Accelerator at Sea. I and a few other reporters were invited to observe said program, a five-day excursion in Alaska that put recent college graduates, aspiring entrepreneurs, legends of the sea, and soft-spoken financial titans on the same footing: spotting whales from Zodiacs in the morning, learning from one another in the afternoon, and drinking whiskey good and bad under the Northern lights in the pre-dawn dark. In that time I got to know the dozen or so companies in the accelerator, the second batch from the SOA but the first to experience this oddly effective enterprise. And I also gathered from conversations among the group the many challenges facing conservation-focused startups. The picture painted by just about everyone was one of impending doom from a multiplicity of interlinked trends, and as many different approaches to averting or mitigating that doom as people discussing it.
